As a parent or caregiver, one of your top priorities is creating a safe environment for your baby, toddler, or child. Children are naturally curious! You may begin to panic as your infant or toddler explores all the nooks and crannies in their room. This guide will walk you through several methods to effectively baby proof or childproof an infant or toddler’s space in our guide of how to childproof your infant or toddlers bedroom. Let’s get started!

How to Childproof Your Infant or Toddlers Bedroom

How to Childproof Your Infant or Toddlers Bedroom

It can be really overwhelming to think about all the different aspects of childproofing your infant or toddler’s bedroom. A baby proofing house or bedroom checklist may be a great strategy to help ease your anxiety.

Step 1: Secure Electrical Outlets

Install Outlet Covers: Cover all electrical outlets within reach of your child using outlet covers or plugs. This prevents your little one from sticking fingers or objects into sockets.

Use Cord Shorteners: Keep cords from lamps or other electronics (like a baby monitor) out of reach by using cord shorteners or concealing them behind furniture). Loose cords can be a choking hazard.

Step 2: Soften Sharp Edges

Add Corner and Edge Bumpers: Furniture with sharp corners, like tables or dressers, can be hazardous. Reduce the risk of bumps and bruises by attaching corner and edge numbers to sharp furniture edges.

Step 3: Lock Cabinets and Drawers

Appy Cabinet and Drawer Locks: To prevent your baby from accessing potentially dangerous materials, and to keep curious hands away from potentially harmful items, secure all drawers and cabinets with locks or latches. Limiting access is key. Choose models of locks that are easy for adults to open but challenging for toddlers.

Step 4: Anchor and Stabilize Heavy Furniture

Anchor Furniture to Walls: Tall or heavy furniture such as bookcases, dressers, and bookshelves run the risk of creating a tipping hazard. If your child decides to pull themselves up or start climbing, it could create a very dangerous situation. To prevent this, anchor heavy furniture to the wall with straps.

Step 5: Choose Safe Flooring

Place Non-Slip Rude Pads: Babies love to explore by crawling and walking. Ensure the flooring is safe by using non-slip rugs or securing rugs with non-slip pads. Non-slip rugs prevent flips and falls by placing the pads under area rugs. This is especially important in play areas.

Step 6: Monitor the Environment

Install a Baby Monitor: A baby monitor is an invaluable tool for keeping eyes and ears on your little one while they’re in their room. Setting up a reliable baby monitor in a good location to give you the best view of your child is important. You are ensuring that they are never unsupervised. Consider one with both audio and video capabilities for added peace of mind.

If you are looking for a dual monitor, to view more than one room, we highly recommend V-Tech.

Childproofing or toddler proofing takes some time and effort. The peace of mind you’ll receive is invaluable. By following these methods, you create a safe haven for your little one. Client Review

See what this mama had to say about our sleep services below:

“I cannot express enough how life-changing it has been to work with Molly at Sleep Shore. Before hiring Molly, my baby was only napping in her swing and was waking up every 2-3 hours in the middle of the night. Bedtime was always such a struggle, with me rocking her to sleep and hoping she wouldn’t wake up as soon as I laid her in the crib. The anxiety of going out was overwhelming. I knew I had to rely on the swing for naps, and I felt stuck in this cycle of frustration and exhaustion.

After I hired Molly, everything changed. Molly’s expertise and gentle approach helped my baby transition from the swing to napping in her crib for 1 to 2-hour stretches. We completely eliminated the swing! Not only did my baby start sleeping better during the day, but she also began sleeping through the night!

I now feel like I have my life back, have time to myself again, and can actually enjoy spending time with my baby without feeling constantly tired and frustrated. Molly’s support and guidance have been invaluable. I am so grateful for the positive impact she’s had on our sleep routine. If you’re struggling with sleep issues, I highly recommend Molly at Sleep Shore!”
